Yellow cranes tower above site of stadium construction

ARLINGTON -- Another crane has been added to the Arlington skyline at the Dallas Cowboys stadium site near Collins Street and Randol Mill Road.

The fourth of six yellow cranes went up last week and is moving reinforced steel and concrete into the stadium's 50-foot bowl. Twenty-five-foot concrete pillars now dot about three-fourths of the stadium floor.

Starting Monday, construction crews will pour the first elevated concrete slab for the hall-of-fame level in the southwest quadrant of the stadium.

"You'll see an awful lot of concrete work here for the next eight months," construction manager Jack Hill said Friday.

Residents will also start to see construction work outside the fenced-off site as crews begin leveling the grass amphitheater on Randol Mill Road to make way for the Baird Farm Road extension and a parking lot for the Texas Rangers.

After 8 years of work, trail construction to begin

Construction could begin next week on a recreation trail linking Correctionville and the county's Little Sioux Park. Efforts to build the trail began in 1999, and Schneider was asked if he thought the project would ever reach the point of construction."You never knew," he said, laughing. The conservation board has approved the $991,655 contract with Elk Horn Construction Company of Sergeant Bluff to build the 1.7-mile concrete trail. The opening date is targeted for July 1.It's been a long process, one that required four years to acquire right of way for the trail, then more time to secure grant money to pay for construction. And throughout the process, engineers and planners had to figure out how to cross the Little Sioux River.A 115-year-old historical railroad bridge extended halfway across the river, but the other half had been cut away by a salvager years ago.

Cheatham builders organizing

Cheatham homebuilders are looking for greater involvement in local policy-making, having taken the first steps toward forming a Cheatham County Homebuilders Association.

Though not an official chapter yet, area homebuilders met last week with officials from the Homebuilders Association of Middle Tennessee at the Riverview Restaurant.

Maintain your home with a little know-how

Any chore is easier if you know how to do it correctly. Here are pointers for some of the maintenance jobs on your fall checklist:

Caulking

A gap in an exterior wall lets heated air escape. Common places for openings include the edges of doors, windows and chimneys, the places where pipes or wires enter the house, and the joint between the foundation and the walls.

Most of those gaps can be sealed using paintable caulk, although chimneys require a caulk specifically for that purpose. For openings that are too big for caulk, use expandable foam.

Caulk comes in squeezable tubes as well as tubes that fit into a caulking gun. It's worth investing in a caulking gun if you're doing a big job because squeezing the trigger is easier on your hands than squeezing a tube.

Couple withdraws plans for historic home

PASADENA - Former Councilwoman Ann-Marie Villicana and her husband, restaurateur Robin Salzer, will not after all put the Paul Williams-designed Morris Landau House on a hillside overlooking the Arroyo Seco.

The couple won t appeal a Planning Commission decision denying them permission to reassemble the 1936 mansion on the South San Rafael Avenue lot because of its size. Their plans now are to build themselves a new home there and restore the house designed by the prominent African-American architect somewhere else as a family home, Salzer said Friday.

Our hearts tell us to go forward, but our heads tell us enough is enough, Salzer said of their decision not to take their case to the City Council. There was so much animosity created ... It s gotten to the point where we re going to look for a site in a city that wants the house.

Inspired Moor Ride Gets Irazu Home

Daniel Moor, in the last stages of his apprenticeship, produced an inspired ride to get Irazu home by a long head in the Bart Cummings stayers race at Flemington this afternoon.

Back with the tail enders for most of the race, Moor was able to get a rails run coming around the home turn which enabled him to get to the lead without expending very much energy.

Irazu needed all of that fortitude to withstand a late challenge by the Stephen Baster ridden Aznavour which covered plenty of extra ground to make a run out wide.

Under vigorous riding from Moor, Irazu ($13) prevailed by a long head from Aznavour ($10-$12) with a length to third placed Bay Story ($10-$11). After making all the early running, Chilean import Cefalu ($21-$26) ran an improved race to finish fourth, only a half neck behind Bay Story, another import.
