The lights are going off for good at the once high-flying furniture chain Storehouse with operations in Wellington and Downtown at the Gardens. On Friday a bankruptcy court judge ordered the 71-store chain to liquidate its merchandise, then close the doors for good in about 10 weeks. Storehouse, known as a home-decor icon with swanky goods such as leather sofas and zebra-print ottomans, has eight Florida locations. .
Halfway through Friday night's home opener, the Palo Alto Vikings looked nothing like the team that knocked off Los Gatos last week. Twenty-four minutes later, however, the Vikings reclaimed the momentum as they coasted to a 42-14 victory over the Chargers. In the first half, both teams ran all over the other's defense and it appeared like the team with the ball last would win. The 14-14 score at halftime stunned many of the Viking faithful who waited nearly a month to see the first home game, but Wilcox never had a chance in the second half. Twenty-eight unanswered Viking points turned a nail biter into a laugher. The Vikings (4-1, 2-0) entered with momentum after their first win against Los Gatos since 1995, but after such an emotional win last week, the Chargers (2-3, 1-1) hoped to bring the Vikings back down to earth.
If you've noticed large populations of flying insects that look a lot like giant mosquitoes congregating around your lawns and screens, you're not alone. They're crane flies, says Jody Mills, horticulturist with Broccolo Tree and Lawn Care in Henrietta. Three species of these insects are appearing in our area, says Mills, who notes they all look alike and won't bite you. One is our native crane fly, which doesn't hurt turf. There are also two European species, the larvae of which can cause serious damage. Should you fertilize? Fall fertilization is a good idea if there aren't enough nutrients in the soil or they're in a form that can't be absorbed by roots, says Dave Dailey, president of Birchcrest Tree & Landscape in Webster. Fall fertilizer should have higher quantities of phosphorous (middle number) and potassium (last number) for root strength and overall plant health.
The City of Charlottesville honored four of its residents for bringing the community together. The annual recognition is made in the spirit of Drewary J. Brown, a Charlottesville civil rights leader and activist, who died in 1998. Brown was known for reducing racial barriers and enriching the lives of everyone in the city. Honored were Elizabeth Gleason, Dr. Charles Gleason, and William Washington, Jr. A posthumous award was given to Virginia Carrington. All represent different backgrounds. "You'll find a preacher, an educator, a shoe store owner, and a developer," said Bridge Builder Committee Member Virginia Dougherty. "I have received a lot of support, a lot of forgiveness, and a lot of grace," said Bridge Builder Award Recipient William Washington.

TANGERANG: It was business as usual at the construction site of Pamulang Square near Lake Tujuh Muara on Jl. Siliwangi in Tangerang regency Thursday despite mounting protests from environmentalists and local residents. Dozens of workers were seen digging holes to sink pylons for the shopping mall construction. Protesters are concerned by the fact that the lake functions as a water catchment for the regency and a shopping mall construction would damage the environment near the lake, said Sugandi who is an activist with Lake Tujuh Muara Conservation Committee. He said the committee and residents of the three subdistricts had delivered their objections to the developer's plan to build the square near the lake, but received no response. "I think our concern is reasonable.
