Home builders to face new road fee

LANDOWNERS who build a house in the Redlands could face a new fee of more than $13,000 under a Redland Shire Council proposal to fund road upgrades.

On the mainland the charges will not apply to land resulting from subdivision or density increase.

On the Southern Moreton Bay Islands, however, where the land is nearly totally subdivided, the charge will apply at the time of building a house.

The public has until October 6 to have its say on Council's plan to introduce transport infrastructure charges to pay for roads and other local transport improvements.

Land on the Bay Islands was subdivided before Council took control in 1973. With no planning controls in place at the time, no financial provision was made for the cost of basic roads. .

Information Builders bolsters portable toolkit

Business intelligence (BI) software specialist Information Builders has today launched an upgraded version of its portable BI solution WebFocus Active Reports, featuring enhanced scalability, tighter integration with Microsoft productivity tools and an improved user interface.

Dave Armstrong, marketing manager at Information Builders, said the upgrades had been made in response to customer feedback in order to enhance the functionality of the toolkit.

Active Reports, which was launched late last year, allows mobile workers to download both business data and analytical functionality in a single file so that they can analyse the data through a BI interface while off line.

"Active Reports compresses a lot of data into a small file," said Armstrong. "You've got the interface in that file so people in the field who can’t get online, perhaps because they are in a plane, can still analyse data and feel as if they are connected."

He added that the new version features beefed up scalability so it can handle more lines of data and deliver analytical reports in three seconds as opposed to the 18 seconds it took using the previous version.

Kennedy feels right at home

Sixth District Rep. Mark Kennedy, currently in a heated battle with Hennepin County Attorney Amy Klobuchar over the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Mark Dayton, talked farming and politics in general in Lonn and Deb Kiel's rural Crookston kitchen Thursday. But it might as well have been Kennedy's own kitchen, because the accountant and business-person by trade seemed right at home. The three-term Republican representative proudly mentioned his rural Minnesota upbringing, in Pequot Lakes, the fact that he's married to a "Hawley Nugget," and the notion that he and his family have probably brought more livestock to the state fair than any other representative or senator in the nation. It's clear that in his race with Klobuchar, Kennedy is trying to draw a clear line between his rural Minnesota upbringing and value system, and Klobuchar's big-city support system.
