Daniels stumps for minorities in construction

Gov. Mitch Daniels on Thursday hired on two old hands for the job of getting more minorities into construction jobs in Northwest Indiana.Ivy Tech Community College and the Indiana Plan, a union-supported construction trainer, will be in charge of pre-apprentice programs meant to right a history of exclusion for minorities in some construction trades.

"We are entering into a building boom the like of which the state has never seen," Daniels said to a packed room at the Gary WorkOne."This is a time of tremendous opportunity for young people and maybe some not-so-young people."The governor listed projects that will provide those jobs, including Cabela's, in Hammond; Bass Pro Shops, in Portage; casino projects in Northwest Indiana; and the centerpiece, $12 billion in Major Moves road construction.Daniels has been touting those projects to supportive crowds in frequent swings around the state as Election Day approaches. But at the WorkOne, the Republican governor faced tough questions on whether or not the new training program, called Major Opportunities, will deliver on its promises.Al Mays, who works in the Renaissance Program, a prisoner rehabilitation program, wanted to know if people with a felony in their past will get an equal chance to participate."And how will we be sure it's fair?" Mays said, "because historically the trades have a record of not being fair to minorities and in particular felons."All you had to do was look out the front window of the WorkOne at the construction project on Grant Street to see that minorities often have little representation, said Dwight Gardener, president of the Baptist Ministers Conference, in Gary.State Sen.

Federals Appeals Court: Army Must Stop Stryker-Brigade Construction

The U.S. Army must stop all Stryker-Brigade construction and training in Hawaii. That's what a federal appeals court decided on Thursday. Before resuming Stryker operations, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the Army must first complete a "Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement" that considers other areas for the brigade. This ruling reverses a District Court decision in favor of the Army. Earth-justice attorney David Henkins filed the lawsuit on behalf of three Native Hawaiian groups. .

Caparo completes construction of first T1 prototype

(autoinsidernews) - Caparo Vehicle Technologies has completed construction of the first of two Caparo T1 prototypes and has already begun testing the car. The first T1 prototype labeled ‘XP1′ successfully started under it's own power and will be used for high speed trials and engine mapping and long-term durability tests.

The company is currently working on construction of the second prototype, ‘XP2,' which is expected to be completed before the end of the year. The second prototype will have a similar life of performance and durability testing, reports Trend.

The first production Caparo T1 is scheduled to roll off the line in March of 2007. With an annual output of only 24 cars, it isn't a huge surprise that half of the first year production vehicles have already been pre-ordered.

Decks add welcome distraction

Outdoor living spaces are becoming one of the hottest trends among American homeowners. Getting "away from it all" can be as close as setting foot on a new deck. Decks can be used for more than sunbathing and grilling, so they should be designed and built accordingly. In developing an outdoor retreat, consider the following:

Decking materials: Choose materials that "flow" with the rest of the house. What's the best out there? Wood, such as redwood or cedar, is highly recommended. It can be repaired, restored and refinished, adding years to the life of your deck. There are many synthetic materials to choose from as well. These do not need finishing, nor do they splinter. However, they are more expensive, have a tendency to sag and can become hot underfoot. Look into proper maintenance recommendations before choosing what's right for you.
