LANDOWNERS who build a house in the Redlands could face a new fee of more than $13,000 under a Redland Shire Council proposal to fund road upgrades. On the mainland the charges will not apply to land resulting from subdivision or density increase. On the Southern Moreton Bay Islands, however, where the land is nearly totally subdivided, the charge will apply at the time of building a house. The public has until October 6 to have its say on Council's plan to introduce transport infrastructure charges to pay for roads and other local transport improvements. Land on the Bay Islands was subdivided before Council took control in 1973. With no planning controls in place at the time, no financial provision was made for the cost of basic roads. .
There's new information about an Acadiana contractor charged with taking ten of thousands of dollars from a Lafayette homeowner. Last month, TV 10 reported that Lafayette Parish sheriff's deputies arrested 39-year-old Scott Fontenot for theft. Investigators say Fontenot agreed to construct an addition to a family's home and then took off with $43,000. Wednesday, the state licensing board gave Fontenot a $1,000 fine and ordered him to cease and desist work on any other projects. Contractor issues like this are a growing concern during hurricane recovery. There continues to be an increase in new home construction in Lafayette more than a year after hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In August of '05, there were 64 permits issued to build new homes.
The Nashua Cape Cobras sneaked a five-wicket victory over the Fidentia Warriors in MTN Domestic Championship action at Sahara Park Newlands on Friday evening. The game looked anything but won when the Cobras found themselves in trouble at 58/4, with Adam Bacher, Andrew Puttick, Herschelle Gibbs and JP Duminy back in the hut in pursuit of the Warriors' score of 233/6. But former Proteas stand-in skipper Ashwell Prince and all-rounder Vernon Philander knuckled down, the pair contributing 119 for the fifth wicket. Prince — who scored 78 off 84 balls — was dismissed 60 runs short of his team's winning total, with Philander and skipper Thami Tsolekile knocking off the remaining runs. Left-arm seamer Lonwobe Tsotsobe picked up two wickets — including the dangermen Gibbs and Duminy — whilst fellow opening bowler Lyall Meyer also grabbed a pair of wickets.
