Pennsylvania tragedy strikes close to home

Aaron Beiler didn't get much work done yesterday. The manager of the Pennsylvania Dutch Farmers Market's mind was back home in Lancaster County, where four little girls in homemade white dresses were buried in hand-hewn wooden coffins.

He spent part of the day crying. Not just at the memory of the bloody scene left in the schoolhouse where the girls were killed Monday, but at the kindness shown by people here in the Annapolis area and elsewhere.

"I came to open up, about 5 this morning, and found this sign," he said pointing to a message hastily written and taped on the employee entrance at the market in Parole.

"God Bless You. You are loved. Our prayers are with you, your friends, and your neighbors," the message read.

Mr. Beiler went around the building to open the other doors and found bouquets of flowers left by well-wishers.

Drury Hotel owners sue over safety of construction site

The Drury Hotel chain on Friday sued the developer and general contractor of a downtown Marriott Courtyard hotel, saying the construction site has become a hazard to Drury guests and property.

During a news conference at the 150-room Drury Inn & Suites Riverwalk at 207 N. St. Mary's St., Drury spokesman T.J. Connolly showed pictures of a black tarp shielding the construction site floating in the wind over the adjacent Drury's driveway. He alleged that bricks and cement have fallen on the Drury driveway where guests exit, which creates a hazard.

The lawsuit by Auburn Investments, a subsidiary of Drury, claims defendants Lyda Swinerton Builders Inc. and NSHE TX Gainesville LLC — developers of the hotel — have trespassed on Drury property with falling debris and construction equipment.

Parade of Homes builders honored

Three local builders were recognized Tuesday evening with People's Choice Awards for their work featured in the 2006 Clark County Parade of Homes.

The parade, at Washougal's Allegro Ridge subdivision in July, was attended by more than 21,000 people. The annual event is sponsored by the Building Industry Association of Clark County.

About 4,300 paradegoers cast votes for the People's Choice Awards, which went to three of the show's eight home builders competing in seven categories.

Award winners and categories include: Best of Show, Hayden's Manor by Omega Custom Homes; Best Landscaping, Giving House Encore by Fazzolari Custom Homes; Best Architectural Design, Hayden's Manor by Omega Custom Homes; Best Interior Design, the Cheyenne by Ken Winkelman General Contractor; Best Master Suite and Best Kitchen, Hayden's Manor by Omega Custom Homes; and Best Bathroom, the Cheyenne by Ken Winkelman.

It's win or go home for Yankees

DETROIT -- Look around the Yankees' clubhouse and you will see several players who have been here before.

Facing elimination in the postseason is never a comfortable position to be in, but if any team has the veterans to handle such a scenario, it's the Yankees.

That's what New York will face on Saturday, as the Tigers try to send the Yankees home for an early winter in Game 4 of the American League Division Series.

"We have to just remember who we are and what we're about as a team," Johnny Damon said. "We have to pull in the same direction. We've been doing it all year, but tomorrow is key. We can't worry about losing. That's not even an option."

If anybody knows about the pressure of elimination, it's Damon. Two Octobers ago, he was a member of the Red Sox, who fell into an 0-3 hole against the Yankees in the AL Championship Series.
