Construction ready to start on Greene complex

SNOW HILL — Despite the rainy weather, the long awaited recreation complex will finally start construction.

“This will be Greene County's first public recreation facility," said Mary Betty Kearney, chairwoman of the Greene County Commissioners. “This was a vision by many people."

The recreation department will add two football/soccer fields, three baseball/softball fields, concession stands, a picnic area, a playground and a walking trail to deal with the increase in sport participation during the past five years.

The new fields will be located at N.C. 13 and N.C. 58 right before the city boundary. The goal is to start playing spring sports on them next year.

Greene County received $350,000 from the N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) and $150,000 from the North Carolina Division of Community Assistance to go towards the project.

Local motorcycle shop keeps winning awards, continues to make a ...

Jim Giuffra, owner of Amador Fine Tune and AFT Customs in Martell, is determined to make a name for his business in the motorcycle world. And he is doing a great job.

Most recently a motorcycle built by Giuffra, with the help of Ron Abel and Melissa Kirkpatrick, was awarded a first place most radical at Rat's Hole Show in Sturgis, S.D., on Aug. 11 and placed third for metric at the World Championship of Custom Bike Building, also in Sturgis, on Aug. 7, the same show in which an AFT Customs motorcycle took home first place in 2005. While in Sturgis, the builders were also invited to participate in the Legends Top 50 Show, where they were the only metric bike builders included in the top 50 builders in the world.

As for placing third at the World Championships, Giuffra said, "There was some stuff on the bike that was so new people didn't realize what was going on."

The bike has three firsts that have never been seen in the motorcycle industry, Giuffra added.

Peach plans $9.5M bond sale for school construction

FORT VALLEY - The Peach County Board of Education approved laying the groundwork for the future sale of $9.5 million in bonds backed by the special purpose local option sales tax approved by voters in September 2005.

School Superintendent Tommy Daniel said Friday he will come back to the board in the near future with the final price and terms of the sale for board approval.

The bonds will finance construction of two new elementary schools, improvements at Peach County High and other projects, Daniel said.

The bond sales had been held up by a lawsuit earlier this year challenging the validation of such an action. The lawsuit was dropped in August.

Bill Camp of Knox Wall, which is handling the bonds for the school board, made a presentation at Thursday's meeting outlining the projected monthly income over five years from the additional penny sales tax.
