Residents protest mall construction

TANGERANG: It was business as usual at the construction site of Pamulang Square near Lake Tujuh Muara on Jl. Siliwangi in Tangerang regency Thursday despite mounting protests from environmentalists and local residents.

Dozens of workers were seen digging holes to sink pylons for the shopping mall construction.

Protesters are concerned by the fact that the lake functions as a water catchment for the regency and a shopping mall construction would damage the environment near the lake, said Sugandi who is an activist with Lake Tujuh Muara Conservation Committee.

He said the committee and residents of the three subdistricts had delivered their objections to the developer's plan to build the square near the lake, but received no response.

"I think our concern is reasonable.

A Day at Camp Democracy

But my talk goes off well. I do a powerpoint presentation on the Progressive activist's hero's journey. When it's done, I get a lot of thank you's

One thing I did was ask, "who are your heroes-- living people?"

I'd love to hear from you who your hero is. I'll be posting this report on Camp Democracy as an article, so please, respond to the article with a comment, saying who your progressive hero is and why.

Though the folks at Camp Democracy had offered me free lodging, I decided to head home a little after seven. Between waiting for and catching trains, I got home about half past midnight. it was well worth the trip. I've met people who travelled from Michigan, upstate New York, Washington state, virginia, from all over the place. Make the time.

Home construction slumps

Homebuilders in central Ohio are getting hammered by a downturn in the housing industry that stretches nationally. Construction in Franklin and Delaware counties combined is about half of what it was at this time in 2004, said Jim Hilz, executive director of the Building Industry Association of Central Ohio. Declines are turning out to be deeper than expected, according to economists for the National Home Builders Association. Home construction nationally is expected to fall 11.5 percent this year followed by a similar drop next year. Trend lines are even worse in central Ohio. "The layoffs in the industry among builders, suppliers and subcontractors are numerous," Hilz said. The number of building permits issued in Franklin County for single-family homes through July was 36 percent less than at the same time last year, Hilz said.
