Building Builder works to create custom homes

A: I started in the building business about 10 years ago. I have a degree in engineering from Mississippi State and so I had hands-on experience for about eight years before I went to work for myself.

Q: Why did you transition from engineering to building?

A: When I got married, we began to look for a house. We just didn't find anything we liked that met our needs, so we finally settled on one that needed to be fixed up. I did that so well that someone came along who liked it and offered to buy it from me. I'd always wanted to work for myself, so that's where it started. I bought another house and did the same thing and eventually opened my own business.

Q: Why is having your own business so important to you?

A: It is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.

As art and a home for art, it succeeds

In at least one significant way, the Denver Art Museum's radically unconventional addition has succeeded before it even opens.

Some area residents have scorned the Frederic C. Hamilton Building, others enthusiastically embrace it. It has generated international press attention, and many of the country's top architecture critics have already visited it or soon will.

Museum leaders wanted to raise a ruckus and get noticed, and to that end, they have gotten exactly what they wanted.

Architect Daniel Libeskind has said the $90.5 million building was inspired in part by the Rocky Mountains. With its faceted, crystalline forms and jutting, sharply sloping walls, it looks like a mineral formation that has just burst from the ground.

It is the anti-box. There are no perpendicular lines, no two rooms the same shape.

ND's Carlson has never outgrown his home

SOUTH BEND -- There's a 10-year-old girl in Litchfield, Minn., who probably couldn't care less whether John Carlson pancakes a Stanford linebacker today or splits the Cardinal's zone defense for a touchdown catch.

The Notre Dame senior tight end is already a hero in her eyes.

His rise from a rumor with promise to a man of statistical substance this season hasn't elevated his status one iota. Back in Litchfield -- a town that proclaims on its Web site "On quiet summer days ... you can hear 'big' bass jumping in Lake Ripley ... and hear corn growing in the fields just outside of town" -- who John Carlson is takes precedent over what he is.
