WASHINGTON — An explosion in the use of earmarks, Congress members' way of funding pet projects without public scrutiny, is fueling new efforts to track the practice amid fears of rising corruption. The number of earmarks surged nearly fourfold over the past decade to 15,877 last year, according to the Congressional Research Service, the nonpartisan research arm of Congress. .
Starting quarterback Anthony Orio is limping with a right ankle sprain. His backup, John Sperrazza, has jammed fingers on his throwing hand. Tailback Maurice Murray (knee tendinitis) has been limited since a 27-carry effort at Holy Cross. And coach Rocky Hager was hobbling after undergoing an arthroscopy Monday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. The results on the field have not been soothing -- four losses in a season-opening five-game road trip. ``I haven't been sleeping that well and that's not because of my knee surgery," said Hager. Today at noon, the Huskies (1-4, 0-2, Atlantic 10 ) welcome 18th-ranked Delaware (2-2, 1-1 A-10 ) to Parsons Field -- becoming the last of the 116 Division 1-AA programs in the country to play a game on home turf. Sperrazza, a 6-foot-3-inch, 240-pounder from Mansfield, is expected to start.
