Home sellout streak reaches 485 games

The Avalanche's NHL-best consecutive home sellout streak reached 485 games Wednesday night - although two hours before game time there still were tickets available.

At almost 6 p.m., Kroenke Sports chief marketing officer Paul Andrews said there were 70 tickets available to the public, which were bought with walk-up sales.

"We battle the perception that the Avalanche are always sold out," Andrews said. "We keep hammering the message that people should not assume Avalanche games are all sold out."

Andrews said on game days there are always between 300 to 400 tickets that go on sale to the public at 1 p.m. They are usually lower bowl seats.

Andrews would not disclose what the Avalanche's season- ticket sales base is, other than to say it is "similar to past years," which ranged from 12,500 to slightly higher.

Tasports withdraws strike complaint

A complaint being heard in the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) over action taken by electrical and maintenance workers on Tasmanian ports has been withdrawn.

Tasports accused the workers of taking illegal industrial action when they walked off the job earlier this week over concerns about the use of a contractor.

The AIRC hearing resumed this morning and both parties agreed to meet in a few weeks to try to resolve the matter.

On Tuesday, workers at three of the state's main ports walked off the job because a contractor was doing work in Hobart they said permanent workers should do.

Workers returned to the job the following morning.

However, several hours later Tasports lodged a complaint with the AIRC, claiming the action had been illegal under the industrial relations laws.

Decks add welcome distraction

Outdoor living spaces are becoming one of the hottest trends among American homeowners. Getting "away from it all" can be as close as setting foot on a new deck. Decks can be used for more than sunbathing and grilling, so they should be designed and built accordingly. In developing an outdoor retreat, consider the following:

Decking materials: Choose materials that "flow" with the rest of the house. What's the best out there? Wood, such as redwood or cedar, is highly recommended. It can be repaired, restored and refinished, adding years to the life of your deck. There are many synthetic materials to choose from as well. These do not need finishing, nor do they splinter. However, they are more expensive, have a tendency to sag and can become hot underfoot. Look into proper maintenance recommendations before choosing what's right for you.

Robert De Niro Buys $23 Million Manhattan Home

Oscar winner Robert De Niro has paid millions for the former home of Miramax boss Harvey Weinstein. The Hollywood actor bought the lavish 15-room property on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York, from Weinstein's ex-wife, Eve, for a reported $23 million.

The property features stunning views of Central Park and includes a luxurious film theatre, installed by movie mogul Weinstein before the couple divorced last year. The star, 63, will share the property with his wife of nine years, Grace Hightower.

Among his new neighbors are Sting and his wife Trudie Styler, who own the apartment directly below De Niro's.
