Hilton has backing of home town

VISUALLY-impaired Greenock chess wizard Stephen Hilton will represent Inverclyde when he jets off to India for the World Championships tomorrow.

The 44-year-old Morton fan, who damaged his sight during an accident as a child, will battle it out at the world event against around 150 other blind or visually-impaired chess players from approximately 40 countries.

The event will be held in Goa, India, and will run from Sunday to 19 October over nine rounds.

He said: "A world Championship is the pinnacle for anyone in any sport and I am looking forward to the challenges ahead.

"I have prepared for the event with the help of International master Richard Palliser and International Master of Correspondence Chess Kenny Harman. These players have helped me in my opening preparation for this event.

Safety nightmare or business opportunity?

Contractors are part of any large-scale chemical or industrial complex. They are involved in many aspects of operations such as maintenance, construction, commissioning, demolition, materials/waste handling and inspections.Often, contract staff can number a few thousand people, and they may even establish permanent business addresses in a large factory or industrial complex. At a typical chemicals or industrial complex, there are frequently a number of distinct opera-ting companies, with different products, management, health and safety policy, legal structures and operating standards. These companies are part of a complex ecosystem, frequently sharing infrastructure and resources. Contractors may service many clients, sometimes rotating between companies within a single working day or shift. Each operating company is responsible for managing its activities in terms of both legislation and environmental health and safety policies; however, this can present a serious challenge, as the participants in this ecosystem pursue their own, sometimes partisan, business goals.

Officials think construction noises sounded like shots fired

The sounds of nearby construction were found to be the source of noise reported as shots fired Friday during the noon hour, according to Enid police.Police received a 12:48 p.m. call reporting someone running from the area of 4th and Iowa after what sounded like gunshots from a firearm.Capt. Jim Nivison of Enid Police Department said officers responded and searched for evidence. They found none.During the search, officers noted construction nearby, specifically a sledgehammer that sounded like a firearm shot."We can't say that was specifically what it was, but it was a very strong possibility," Nivison said.

Seventh monitoring well under construction

General Manager Gene Williams said Thursday the district aims to complete the well in both the Lower and Middle Trinity aquifers. Armadigger of Bandera County drilled the 500-foot shaft Wednesday on Allen Kaisers property north of Center Point.

The wells final depth wouldnt be determined until electric logging was completed, Williams said. The well will be used only for monitoring purposes.

If the well can be completed for both aquifers, the final cost is expected to be about $18,000. If the logging doesnt reveal a separation between the lower and middle Trinity aquifers, it will be less expensive, Williams said.

Trigger wells up

Following recent concerns, the latest trigger well readings show that water levels have stopped falling in the past few weeks.
